Columbus, Ohio is a fun-filled city with plenty for dog lovers to enjoy. Many of restaurants and cafes are pet friendly and there is a plethora of doggy events and activities year round. It’s also home to one of the largest colleges in the country, so photographer Erica Schomaker was sure to include several picturesque college campuses on her location list.

In 2023, Erica Schomaker joined professional photographers around the globe to make a difference for pets in need with 'Tails of the World'. This unique collaborative project celebrates dogs with an annual coffee table book and our latest volume has raised over $65,000 for animal rescue!

Erica raised US$1200 for Purebred Rescue Organization of Ohio with ten pet photoshoots around Columbus, Ohio USA. Denison University Campus and the Ohio Wesleyan University campus both offer a blend of natural beauty and academic inspiration, with ivy-coloured brick buildings and well-manicured lawns.
But Colombus isn't simply a college town. Erica also photographed at many of the city's beloved parks, including the Whetstone Park of Roses (a paradise for flower enthusiasts), Schiller Park, the historic Goodale Park (dating back to 1851) and Quarry Trails Metro Park (a former limestone quarry that has been converted into an inner city oasis).

Further outside of Columbus, Erica also photographed in the charming towns of Dublin, Hilliard and Mansfield. Built in the last 1800s, the Mansfield Reformatory served as a functioning prison until 1990. Over the years it has gained fame for its appearances in various films and shows (including 'The Shawshank Redeptiom'). Visitors can explore the hauntingly beautiful interiors and wander through the expansive gardens.

ABOUT PUREBRED RESCUE ORGANIZATION OF OHIO

Purebred Rescue Organization of Ohio has been rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming companion animals for over twenty years. What started as a small foster-based rescue in Dayton, focused on purebred puppy mill releases and owner surrenders, has grown into a multi-city effort, and now includes the PUPP Prison Dog Training Program and partnerships with shelters across the State of Ohio to help save hundreds of dogs each year. Contrary to our name, we rescue dogs of all breeds, mixes, shapes, and sizes! We provide standard vetting for them while they are in our care - all of our dogs are fixed, heartworm tested, vaccinated, and microchipped before they are placed in adoptive homes.

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER

I have sharpened my skills as a creative pet photographer by capturing my two lively Labs running around our rustic property. In 2015, my spouse and I decided to escape the city life and settled on a quiet countryside property. Since then, our furry family has grown to include 2 amazing Labs Ash & Alder, 1 little fluffy mix, Murph, along with a bunch of chickens and several pigs. My furry companions have taught me a lot, but patience stands out as the most valuable lesson. I've spent countless hours training them and researching various techniques to incorporate into my pet photography. Most recently my eldest dog, Ash, received his advanced trick dog title and I could not be more proud.
